Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) has a 30-year master plan which would provide ‘an integrated and clear future vision’ for a ‘safer, better and bigger railway’.
A joint venture has been awarded a 5•2m Riyal contract to assist with the plan, which will forecast demand for 2010-40 and assess how to respond efficiently, including ways to attract private investment
The main objective of the Saudi Railway Master Plan 2010 – 2040 (SRMP) is to have a conceptual framework in place for the long term development of a future passenger and freight transport network for the Kingdom.
Railway infrastructure spending in Saudi Arabia is growing immensely due to high investment by the government. Major emphasis is also being placed on the development of freight transport in the country along with passenger focus. In addition, the GCC government is planning to construct a railway network that will link other regions. The construction of HSR network is also gaining more importance due to its connectivity to major holy cities thereby leading to a rise in railways revenue.
A total of 833 Saudi engineers have joined the $22 billion Riyadh Metro project since construction started.
The Riyadh metro is a rapid transit system under construction in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is being built by world’s leading construction companies under ANM, BACS and FAST Consortia. It will be the backbone of the city’s public transport system. Riyadh metro, which is also called the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, is due for completion in 2018.
The Haramain High Speed Rail project also known as the “Western Railway” or “Makkah-Medina high speed railway”, is a 453.0 kilometres (281.5 mi)line, plus a branch connection to KAIA airport. The Haramain high-speed railway will replace most buses transporting pilgrims between Makkah and Madinah by December 2016.
The North-South Railway (NSR) project in Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest railway construction and the longest route to adopt the European train control system (ETCS) to date. It is a 2,400km passenger and freight rail line originating in the capital city Riyadh, in the northwest of the country, to Al Haditha, near the border with Jordan.
The North-South Railway line is being built as a part of 3,900km rail expansion plans. The other project is a 1,100km Saudi land-bridge project connecting the eastern and western parts of Saudi Arabia. Due to its strategic importance in contributing to the national economy, the North-South Railway has been given priority over the other projects. The project is expected to transport 4 million tons of commodities and 2 million passengers every year.
