ST Engineering’s Urban Solutions business has secured an $840m turnkey rail services contract for the Taoyuan MRT Brown Line in Taiwan.
The contract was awarded by the Taoyuan City Government as part of a consortium with Hyundai Rotem, and expands ST Engineering’s role in Taiwan’s rail network, where it has delivered rail projects for more than three decades.
Under the contract, ST Engineering will lead overall project management and systems integration, and provide rail electronics solutions including supervisory control and data acquisition, a communications system, an automatic fare collection system and platform screen doors. Working with its partners, the company will be responsible for the overall integration and delivery of key project components, including the signalling system, track works and bulk substation building civil works, while Hyundai Rotem will provide the rolling stock and power supply system. Project execution is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will be delivered over eight years.
Gareth Tang, president of Urban Solutions at ST Engineering, said transport agencies were increasingly seeking trusted partners able to integrate technologies and systems while managing large-scale project delivery. He said the contract reflected the customer’s confidence in the company’s ability to deliver large-scale rail infrastructure projects, drawing on decades of experience delivering major rail projects in Taiwan and around the world. He added that the company looked forward to supporting the continued expansion of Taoyuan’s rail network and delivering a metro system that improves accessibility for local communities.
Comprising seven stations, the 11.38km Taoyuan MRT Brown Line will provide a direct rail connection between Taoyuan City and the Greater Taipei area, improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters once completed.
