Alstom, the global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, participated in the 2025 China International Metro Transit Exhibition & CAMET Forum (MetroTrans 2025), held from 18 to 20 September at the Qingdao Cosmopolitan Exposition. The company showcased its Adessia Stream commuter train making its exhibition debut, alongside scale models of Innovia APM and monorail systems and the Movia metro, plus a comprehensive range of components including traction systems and motors, Flexx bogies and Dispen dampers.
“As urban commuting, airport connectivity and other mobility scenarios converge at pace, urban rail is entering a new phase of coordinated development,” said Ming Geng, Managing Director of Alstom China. “Driven by continuous innovation and local collaboration, we are committed to enabling more people to enjoy journeys that are more convenient, safer and more comfortable, while delivering future-proof, cost-effective solutions that help build greener, smarter and more sustainable urban rail transit networks.”
The Adessia Stream single-deck commuter train represents over 60 years of proven experience in regional commuter train design, manufacturing and maintenance. The Adessia family serves over 60 commuter networks across 15 countries, with more than 19,000 Adessia Stream single-deck trains operating daily in over 30 cities, carrying approximately 20 million passengers. Following more than 20 years of product evolution, the Adessia Stream provides flexible, reliable and cost-efficient solutions for commuter and regional rail networks, combining low energy consumption with a 95% material recyclability rate, high capacity and optimised full lifecycle costs.
Recent global orders demonstrate the portfolio’s continued expansion. Alstom secured a €538 million contract from Greater Wellington to supply 18 Adessia Stream B battery trains and provide 35 years of maintenance. The company also received an order from NJ TRANSIT for 200 additional Multilevel III commuter rail cars and 12 Alp 45 dual-powered locomotives, valued at approximately €1.0 billion.
The Innovia automated people mover system combines automation and rail technologies to deliver high-efficiency, short-haul smart mobility solutions. The fully automated, driverless system features strong scenario adaptability with low noise and energy consumption, seamlessly integrating with airports, transport hubs and commercial districts to address last-mile connectivity challenges while rapidly responding to passenger demand.
The Innovia monorail system offers a medium- to low-capacity solution based on elevated guideway and straddle operation configuration, serving as an aerial link within multi-level urban transport networks. The guideway carried on elevated columns does not occupy surface arterial roads, addressing surface congestion and underground construction challenges. The environmentally friendly rubber-tyred system delivers low noise, strong climbing capability and flexible turning while minimising impacts along the line.
For high-capacity urban trunk lines, the Movia metro adopts lightweight and modular design to reduce energy consumption and support low-carbon, energy-saving and environmentally friendly operation. Advanced technology delivers improved operational performance, safety, comfort and reliability.
Alstom’s comprehensive rail components portfolio, underpinned by over 50 years of design and manufacturing expertise and global industrial presence, consistently delivers optimal solutions for original equipment manufacturers and operators. Together with its Chinese joint ventures, the company showcased traction systems, motors, bogies and dampers at the exhibition.
The traction systems and components are engineered to withstand demanding climates and designed according to eco-design principles, featuring low noise, high efficiency including lightweighting and natural cooling, high recyclability and low lifecycle costs. They comply fully with the latest safety standards and deliver high reliability, efficiency and maintainability, with flexible control solutions including car control, bogie control and axle control providing continuous green traction power for cost-efficient operations.
Alstom’s motor portfolio ranges from 50 kW to 1,600 kW to meet the needs of trains across different speed classes and operating requirements. More than 200,000 Alstom motors are currently in service worldwide, including over 9,000 permanent magnet motors.
The Flexx bogie portfolio has been proven through long-term, demanding operations, delivering safety and cost-efficiency while ensuring comfortable rides. With leading technologies and solutions for multiple vehicle types and speed classes, the bogies combine operational efficiency with passenger comfort. More than 250,000 Alstom bogies are currently in service worldwide.
The Dispen hydraulic damping systems, originating in 1980, have a distinguished pedigree rooted in leading damping technology from Alstom’s Dispen brand in France. Through technology transfer and collaboration, Alstom’s joint venture Qingdao Alstom Railway Equipment Co., Ltd. has become the sole inheritor and developer of this technology in China with fully independent design and development capabilities. The products serve more than 40 countries and regions across the full spectrum of rail applications.
Present in China for over 60 years, Alstom participates across the full spectrum of China’s railway projects with a complete range of rolling stock including high-speed trains, railway passenger cars, locomotives, metro, automated people movers, monorail and trams, plus state-of-the-art components and customised services as well as infrastructure and signalling solutions.
Alstom in China operates eleven joint ventures with almost 10,000 employees. Together, the joint ventures have delivered more than 6,000 railway passenger cars and 1,530 electric locomotives, more than 7,200 metro cars, over 900 monorail cars, 136 automated people mover cars, and 191 tram cars to China’s growing rail transit market and overseas markets. The company provides customers with comprehensive service solutions from heavy maintenance to modernisations, currently maintaining more than 4,100 metro cars under contract. As a major signalling supplier to the Chinese high-speed network, its signalling systems and propulsion equipment are utilised in more than 110 urban mass transit lines through its joint ventures.
