Alstom has joined Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in celebrating the commencement of revenue service on the Delhi Metro Line 7 and Line 8 extensions. The new services cover Majlis Park to Maujpur on Line 7 (the Pink Line) and Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk on Line 8 (the Magenta Line), with the latter planned for future extension to RK Ashram and Janakpuri. Alstom is supplying Metropolis metro trainsets and signalling systems for both extensions.
The current Line 8 section is strategically significant, providing interchange connections to three existing Delhi Metro lines: the Yellow Line at Badli, the Red Line at Madhuban Chowk, and the Pink Line at Majlis Park.

Rolling Stock
As part of a wider €312 million contract, Alstom is supplying 312 cars for Delhi Metro Phase IV. The trains are fully driverless and 100% made in India, designed for a safe speed of 95 kph and an operational speed of 85 kph. They are manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh, described by the company as its largest urban rolling stock manufacturing site in Asia. The Metropolis trainsets are designed for high recyclability and low energy consumption. Alstom has now delivered more than 800 metro cars across the Delhi Metro network.
Signalling
For the Line 7 extension, Alstom has deployed its Urbalis Flo Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system. The technology is designed to support Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) driverless operation. With the extension now open, Line 7 becomes Delhi Metro’s first circular line and, according to Alstom, the longest metro line in India operating at GoA4 level.
Wider Partnership
Alstom has recently secured a 10-year maintenance contract with DMRC for Lines 1 and 2, covering annual maintenance of trains, machinery, plant systems, and housekeeping at DMRC’s Badli depot. The company has also previously supplied and commissioned train control and signalling systems for DMRC’s Red Line (L1), Yellow Line (L2), Green Line (L5), Violet Line (L6), and Pink Line (L7) during Phases I, II, and III.
Beyond Delhi, Alstom has delivered metro trains and rail solutions for Chennai, Mumbai, Lucknow, Kochi, Agra, Kanpur, Bhopal, and Indore. The company has also supplied trains and signalling for India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail network, the NCRTC Rapid Rail Transit System connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut.
