Hitachi Rail is extending its deployment of European Train Control System Level 2 (ETCS L2), working with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Rail to deliver the new digital signalling between Kuraby and Beenleigh stations on the Gold Coast line. Hitachi Rail continues to be a key delivery partner in the digital transformation of the South East Queensland (SEQ) rail network, where more than 200 km of vital passenger rail corridors are being upgraded with digital signalling.
The section between Beenleigh station and Kuraby station is a vital part of the Brisbane to Gold Coast transport corridor, supporting the economic strength of the wider SEQ region by connecting people, communities and businesses.Sarfaraz Samnakay, Managing Director of Hitachi Rail Australia and New Zealand, said: “The extension of works expands Hitachi Rail’s major role in delivering ETCS Level 2 to key parts of the SEQ rail network to support the region’s growth for generations to come.”
Hitachi Rail has already installed ETCS L2 on the Shorncliffe line in Brisbane’s north enabling system testing and training of Queensland Rail staff. This is the final phase before the new digital signalling system can be introduced into passenger services on the Shorncliffe line.
Construction and installation activities are also progressing on Brisbane’s south side and between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes stations.

We are also developing a new Traffic Management System for the entire South East Queensland network and introducing a Possession Management System to enhance track safety and improve network access for maintenance crews. These integrated systems, together with ETCS L2, form part of the backbone of SEQ’s future digital railway.”
