The MTR Corporation announced significant advancement across its portfolio of new railway projects, with the Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line positioned to become the first completed facility in the current expansion wave. The station, part of the Northern Link project, is scheduled for topping out in the fourth quarter of 2025 and remains on track for completion in 2027.
Capital Works Director Carl Devlin briefed media on June 11, highlighting that multiple projects have successfully completed critical preparatory phases and are now entering peak construction periods. The corporation is currently engaged in large-scale structural works across several major initiatives simultaneously.
Construction at Kwu Tung Station, strategically located between Sheung Shui and Lok Ma Chau stations, is proceeding according to schedule. Workers are installing glass panels for platform screen doors while advancing structural work throughout the facility. The station will serve as a key interchange point for the Northern Link system.
The Tung Chung Line Extension has achieved notable milestones, with new track toward Hong Kong Island fully completed in the East Section and trackside equipment installation underway. The main structure of Tung Chung East Station is taking visible form, while the Tung Chung West-bound tunnel is expected to reach completion within the year.
Foundation work has commenced on the Tuen Mun South Extension viaduct, with superstructure construction planned to begin by year-end. The projects present complex logistical challenges as most construction occurs on active railway lines within densely populated areas, requiring work during non-traffic hours and careful coordination with existing operations.
MTR has implemented “Digital Delivery Centres” to manage the complexity of multiple concurrent projects. These facilities employ Building Information Modelling and Smart Site Management Platforms to provide integrated oversight throughout all construction phases. The digital infrastructure includes real-time monitoring capabilities and IoT-connected worker safety equipment to enhance both efficiency and safety performance.
The corporation operates two regional Digital Delivery Centres that consolidate architectural, civil, and electrical information from design through construction. Engineering teams can share and analyze project data in real-time, facilitating coordinated planning and improving communication efficiency across different work groups.
MTR carries over 10 million passenger journeys worldwide each weekday and maintains more than 45 years of railway project experience spanning design, construction, and operations. The current expansion represents a significant infrastructure investment aimed at enhancing Hong Kong’s transportation network connectivity.
