MTR Corporation and CLP Power Hong Kong have received the Association of Energy Engineers’ (AEE) ‘Energy Project of the Year: International’ award for a joint project to cut energy use and emissions across Hong Kong’s railway network.

The ‘CLP x MTR – Decarbonising Railway Transportation’ project includes:

  • upgrading chillers and air conditioning across railway facilities
  • progressively replacing station lighting with LEDs
  • using regenerative braking on all MTR trains
  • introducing electric buses and expanding solar photovoltaic installations.

Together, the measures save nearly 60 GWh of energy a year, equivalent to the annual electricity use of around 14,000 Hong Kong households. They also cut carbon emissions by approximately 22,000 tonnes a year.

CLP Power provided energy audits at railway stations and subsidised efficiency upgrades at stations and depots through its Eco Building Fund. It also offered rebates under its Peak Demand Management Programme to encourage MTR to manage station electricity use during peak periods.

Wilson Kwong, Hong Kong Transport Services Director at MTR Corporation, said: “This award represents prestigious international recognition of the decarbonisation achievements of MTR and CLP Power. MTR will continue to explore and adopt cutting-edge energy-saving technologies and work closely with our power supply partners to provide greener and higher-quality railway transport services for the public.”

MTR accounts for 11 per cent of the energy used by Hong Kong’s public transport sector. It aims to meet its Science Based Targets initiative-endorsed carbon reduction target by 2030. The two companies plan to extend their partnership to new railway projects, further energy-efficiency work and renewable energy applications.

The AEE is a non-profit professional society with more than 18,000 members in over 100 countries and regions.
